Parking Program

Special parking identification, in the form of a permit, is available through the Parking Program for People with Disabilities. For those who qualify, the permit allows access to designated parking spots which may provide extra space for lifts and wheelchairs or other mobility devices and can reduce the distance you have to travel to the building.

Application Form – Parking Permit for Individuals

You can contact any branch of the Council to pick up a form or to request that an application form be mailed to you, or drop by any SGI licence issuer to pick up an application form. You may also download the application form (PDF format) here.

Changes to the Parking Program for People with Disabilities were implemented in 2008 in an effort to bring improvements to the program including more accountability, a new permit design, more flexibility regarding signing authority for medical professionals, and increased awareness about the program.

The new program has several important changes including:

  • Replacing the old non-expiring parking placard with a new permit that will expire every three years.
  • Introduction of a new permit design which will hang from the rear view mirror of the vehicle and will have a clearly identified expiry date.
  • Increasing the number of health professionals that can complete the medical information required on the application form to include occupational therapists, physical therapists, chiropractors and nurse practitioners in addition to physicians.
  • Introduction of a $10 fee for all permits in 2011.

The application form is designed in two parts. The applicant (the person with a disability) completes Part I of the form and your medical professional completes Part II of the form. There is no charge for a parking permit during the phase in period for the new permit design. Introduction of a $10 renewal fee will take place in 2011.
