Saturday, May 14, 2011 the participants and sponsors of the Easter Seals™ Camp Day Relay at Innovation Place sent 45 kids to camp. Event planner Mona Loshack explained, “This family-focused event was a celebration of the kick-off to Camp Easter Seal’s season.”
Individuals were encouraged to raise $250, the cost for sending a child to Camp Easter Seal for a day, and teams of co-workers, family or friends were encouraged to raise $1,500, the amount it costs to send one child to Camp Easter Seal for a week. For every $250 raised, participants’ names were entered to win a round trip for two to Vancouver in a double berth car, courtesy VIA Rail, approximate retail value over $3,800. This year’s winner, D’Shae Bussiere from the Council Crawlers team, said “it’s the trip of a lifetime.”
SED Systems, the event’s top fundraising team, challenged the businesses at Innovation Place as well as city-wide workplaces to enter a team in the Easter Seals™ Camp Day Relay and raise money for this great cause. “SED was especially motivated to be involved this year because the Saskatoon and area Easter Seals Ambassador, Gregory, is the son of one of our long-term employees, Scott Donaldson. Gregory was determined to raise money to help send other kids to camp and we wanted to help him,” says Jennifer Lee, SED Systems team captain. “This year we sent nine kids to camp” she added. Greg Donaldson won a prize for being one of the top fundraisers.
Leonard and Rhonda Ochrey are new participants to the event. Their 17-year-old daughter, Nikki, has a genetic disorder called Cri du Chat. This syndrome gets its name from the characteristic cry of affected infants, which is similar to that of a meowing kitten, due to problems with the larynx and nervous system. Nikki has severe developmental delays and a lot of the physical characteristics. “She will never be able to live without constant care and guidance and cannot perform a lot of the everyday life skills to make her even remotely independent. Nikki is usually a happy child, but has a very big mind of her own when she wants to. She loves being with people and has a very good sense of humor. She is in general a very loving person who just likes to live life to the fullest. We have done everything in our power to give her every experience possible in life and that is why we are so excited she will be going to Camp Easter Seal this year. We hope she has the time of her life, and makes a lot of new friends,” said Rhonda.
Su Huynh, Manager of Camp Easter Seal, said “Easter Seals Camp Day Relay is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to make a difference to help send children in Saskatchewan who live with disability to camp. It’s something these kids wait for all year long. What a great way to help these kids just enjoy being kids, with no worries of barriers to get in the way of their full camp experience.” Camp Easter Seal is the only all-access camp in Saskatchewan. Other programs supported by the Easter Seals™ Camp Day Relay include the Summer Fun Program and Adaptive Technology Services.
