Talk to Me

For people with disabilities, adaptive technology can open up the world and provide possibilities and hope for better ways to get along in the world.

Armed with the belief that there are multiple ways to work, play, and interact with others, Justin Smith and his parents looked to the Adaptive Technology Services Department for technology to enhance Justin’s ability to communicate. There they met Electronic Technologist Reg Bartsch, who believed Justin could learn to use a readily available piece of technology – an Apple iPod touch™.

Outfitted with a small speaker, the iPod touch™ can be used to quickly and clearly “speak” for Justin by just tapping a few screens. The iPod touch™ is also a compact, portable, and affordable piece of technology and comes with applications that provide Justin with a wide variety of activities he can choose from in order to explore, learn, and communicate.
