Step by Step

ALL OF US WILL EXPERIENCE difficult times at some point in our lives. Working through adversity, while challenging, can also allow us the opportunity to find out what we are capable of and to access belief in ourselves that we did not know existed. When Roberta “Bobbi” Lozinsky received the SARCAN 2009 Al McGuire Award of Distinction for Lifeskills Enhancement, it was recognition of the decades she has dedicated to her faith in herself and to achieving her goals.

Following a hit-and-run accident in 1985 where she sustained a brain injury, Bobbi took many steps necessary to move forward. First she had to work through physical rehabilitation. Then Bobbi came to the Saskatchewan Abilities Council for a vocational evaluation. From that assessment, a half-time placement was found for her at Cosmopolitan Industries.

Unable to speak, yet able to see with one eye, having the use of one hand, and using a wheelchair for mobility, Bobbi re-built her body and her self confidence. She was eventually ready for greater employment challenges. She moved to the Council’s Saskatoon branch to work half-time, then later full-time in the Assembly area. In her work environment and with continued staff supports, Bobbi continues to work full-time. She now walks independently, communicates by gesture and writing, and is active in the Council’s Life Enrichment program.

Client Services Coordinator, Lynn Peterson, sums her up, “Everyone loves Bobbi. She lights up the building.”
