Camp Easter Seal

Su is passionate and enthusiastic about Camp Easter Seal so for this issue of Splash we wanted to hear from her. In the following questions, we ask Su to highlight the best of the 2009 camp season at this remarkable facility.
Su Huynh has just completed her first summer season as the Manager at Camp Easter Seal. Su grew up in Saskatoon and graduated from the College of Nursing at the University of Saskatchewan in 1998. She worked as a counsellor at Camp Easter Seal for the summer before graduating from the College. Following graduation Su worked as a Pediatric Nurse at the Royal University Hospital. After her two daughters were born, she went back to work as a Community Nurse on a part-time basis.
Please describe one situation or change initiative that happened at Camp Easter Seal this year that you are most proud of.
I am most proud about the amount of quality time I spent getting to know the campers and staff members. It helped me to connect on a more personal level with everyone and contribute to a fun and positive environment at camp.
What do you feel is the core factor that gives energy and life to Camp Easter Seal?
Definitely the campers! Without them Camp Easter Seal would not be where it is today. The fact that they enjoy coming out to camp year after year even though the food menu has not changed and the activities remain the same. The second factor is the counsellors. They are exceptional staff and many commit to working at camp for more than one summer. This helps to create a more enjoyable and familiar environment for the campers.
Tell us a story about the most memorable activity or performance at the new Sasktel Pioneers Association Amphitheatre.
The variety nights where the campers got an opportunity to perform by singing as a solo act or in a group provided many memorable moments. The most entertaining and unforgettable was a particular performance by a young group of campers. Dressed as the rock group KISS with full costumes and make-up, they performed an airband show. The audience consisting of counsellors and campers loved it!
What three wishes do you have for the future of Camp Easter Seal?
I would really like to have warm, sunny weather all the days of camp! Realistically, though, my three wishes are:
- To have the water lines fixed.
- To have a new pontoon boat or a new motor for the existing one.
- To have our wheelchair accessible playground completed in two years.
Camp Easter Seal is dedicated to providing a fun and barrier free experience to all campers. With your continued support, more kids with disabilities in Saskatchewan will get the opportunity to make summer memories at this extraordinary camp.
